WW2 pillbox on Hungerford Common
View looks northwards across the road bridge over the main railway line just south of Dun Mill lock on the Kennet and Avon canal. A WW2 type 28a pillbox is visible at the far end of the bridge. One of a pair of pillboxes on the site it originally formed part of GHQ Stopline Blue running from Melksham to Reading. In the event of a German invasion the large embrasure was designed for use by a 2 pounder anti-tank gun.
