Loco shed, Boston Lodge works, Ffestiniog Railway
Even on a summer's day, Ffestiniog Railway has a few spare locomotives in the shed at Boston Lodge works. This one is Prince, said to be the oldest engine in regular use in the world, built in 1863. The original specification required the locomotive to carry 50 tons worth of empty carriages back up the hill to the slate quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The return journey, with a train load of slate, would then run under its own weight back to Porthmadog harbour. Link
And they didn't even know about carbon footprints then... Prince's sister engine, Princess, is out of use and sits next to the entrance in the station pub at Porthmadog Harbour station.
