View across Market Street, Colne
The ancient Lancashire town of Colne has a great deal to recommend it. On the edge of beautiful Pennine countryside, it has remained small enough to have real human scale, while providing all the services sometimes lacking in much larger places. The town has long been an enthusiastic patron of the Arts: one of its better-known citizens was bandleader Wallace Hartley, who was still conducting his orchestra aboard the SS 'Titanic' as she slipped below the water. For many years, Colne was the Parliamentary seat of Sir Sidney Silverman, who did more than anyone to bring about the abolition of Capital punishment in the UK.
