Taken from Morlais Ridge which follows the course of an old sea wall. Between 1287, when storms forced an opening through the shingle bar that crossed Rye Bay and redirected the mouth of the River Rother away from New Romney, and the 17th century this view would have been one of a beach. The houses in the distance are on The Ridge which is another road that follows an old sea wall which was protecting the beach from the late 18th century. Much of the land here is built on old shingle banks.
