Disused level crossing
Disused level crossing
The Bog of Allen is criss-crossed by numerous 'industrial railway lines' used to transport turf (peat) from where it is dug out of the moorland, to be burned in local power stations, or for other uses. When individual diggings are worked out, the lines are moved. The metal rails across the R414 road and the rusty gates are the only sign that rail tracks even existed here.
