An informative sign on the trap reads:

This is a Larsen trap.

Please do not disturb.

The North York Moors are designated a Special Protection Area for their nationally and internationally important bird populations of merlin and golden plover and are home to significant populations of curlew, snipe, lapwing and red grouse.

Larsen traps are used to capture crow, magpie, jackdaw, jay and rook, which eat other birds' eggs and chicks. The legal control of predators is well recognised as an important conservation measure.

A live decoy bird is used to attract similar birds which are then killed humanely. The decoy bird is provided with food, water and shelter within the trap. Larsen traps are legal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Thank you.
